30 Days of Dawn
Dawn Patrol: a reconnaissance flight made in the early morning usually to observe enemy positions and movements. While getting up early to surf can often feel like a battle, our mornings certainly weren't as intense as the WW1 pilots. In surfing terms dawn patrol relates to being in the water at sunrise. Two days after my 30th birthday we embarked on a 30 day mission to surf at dawn. The terms? Be up at sunrise (or close...) and spend our mornings in the ocean (or any body of water) preferably surfing. It wasn't always blue skies. In fact, it pretty much never was as June gloom decided to linger through August and our "summery" sessions usually looked more ominous and felt more cold than we had imagined. The surf? Pretty unanimous that we picked the worst 30 days to set out on this quest but 100% worth it. The verdict? The best part of this mission was seeing all our friends in the morning and falling more in the love with this epic sport and our backyard.
